In one paragraph
A statement circulates widely in Islamic writing and online: that "anatomists have found close to five thousand types of benefits and interests that Allah, in His wisdom, has placed within the human body." This dossier answers three questions about it. Who said it? Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (الإمام فخر الدين الرازي), in his commentary on Surah al-Fatiha, not Ibn al-Qayyim (ابن القيم) or al-Ghazali (الغزالي) as is sometimes assumed. Is there a numbered list of five thousand? No: al-Razi gives the figure as a magnitude and sends the reader to the anatomy books (كتب التشريح) of his day. What are those books? Chief among them is Galen’s (جالينوس) Kitab fi Manafi al-A’da (كتاب في منافع الأعضاء), in seventeen books, which the tradition of Hunayn ibn Ishaq (حنين بن إسحاق) rendered into Arabic. What can honestly be delivered, then, is not a forged catalogue of 5,000 items but a faithful reconstruction of the manafi (منافع), the benefits and purposes, organized as that literature organizes them, structure by structure.

The primary source: al-Razi on al-hamdu lillah
The statement is genuinely Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi’s (الرازي), in Mafatih al-Ghayb (مفاتيح الغيب), his great tafsir also known as al-Tafsir al-Kabir (التفسير الكبير). It occurs in the commentary on al-hamdu lillah (الحمد لله). His argument runs: praise (حمد) is owed for blessing (نعمة); to praise for a blessing one must first know it; but the blessings of Allah are past counting: Ibrahim 14:34. As one example of a single blessing whose wonders defeat enumeration, he gives the human body:
ثم إن أصحاب التشريح وجدوا قريباً من خمسة آلاف نوع من المنافع والمصالح التي دبرها الله عز وجل بحكمته في تخليق بدن الإنسانThe masters of anatomy (أصحاب التشريح) found nearly five thousand kinds of benefits and advantageous purposes (المنافع والمصالح) which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, arranged by His wisdom in the creation of the human body.
He immediately adds that this is what the anatomy books (كتب التشريح) record, and that even it is a drop against the encompassing ocean of what those anatomists never reached. He then scales the argument outward: to the Throne (العرش), the Footstool (الكرسي), the layered heavens, the fixed stars and the planets (الثوابت والسيارات), the elements (الأمهات) and the three kingdoms of minerals, plants and animals (المواليد الثلاثة), concluding that the total runs to "a thousand thousand masail" (ألف ألف مسئلة), and that most of it was created for the sake of man: al-Jathiya 45:13.
Why the attribution is secure, and the common misattributions
The English wording that circulates ("close to five thousand types of benefits and interests...") is a faithful translation of this passage, so the statement should be attributed to al-Razi, not to Ibn al-Qayyim (ابن القيم), al-Ghazali (الغزالي), or Ibn Sina (ابن سينا). A separate and smaller figure circulates elsewhere, "over a thousand benefits of the human organs" (عد علماء التشريح ألف منفعة), which is a different, later paraphrase. The presence of two different numbers, one thousand and nearly five thousand, is itself a caution against treating "five thousand" as a fixed scientific statistic rather than a transmitted magnitude.

The book behind it: Galen’s Manafi al-A’da
When al-Razi (الرازي) defers to "the books of anatomy", the dominant work of that genre, and the one whose very title matches his vocabulary of manafi (منافع), is Galen’s (جالينوس):
كتاب في منافع الأعضاءKitab fi Manafi al-A’da, "On the Benefits (or Uses) of the Parts" (Greek: De Usu Partium).
Established textual facts about the Arabic work: it is in seventeen books (مقالات); it was translated through the Syriac by Hubaysh (حبيش), the nephew of Hunayn ibn Ishaq (حنين بن إسحاق), and revised by Hunayn himself, the master of the ninth-century Baghdad translation movement; and it became a foundation of medieval Islamic medicine. The complete work is large: the standard English edition runs to roughly eight hundred pages.
The match with al-Razi is not only thematic but verbal. His phrase is al-manafi wa’l-masalih (المنافع والمصالح); the genre itself is named manafi al-a’da (منافع الأعضاء). He is invoking the whole teleological-anatomy tradition, in which every structure is examined for its purpose, and whose master text this is.

Book 1 worked in full: the hand (اليد)
Galen’s premise for the whole book: man was given no natural weapon, hide, or armour, because he was given something better, the hand, the instrument by which he makes every weapon and every art. The hand is "the instrument that serves the instruments" (آلة الآلات): reason designs, the hand executes. From that premise he reads a purpose into every feature of the hand.
The hand as a whole (اليد)
- grasping objects of every size: the large in the whole palm, the small between the fingertips, the tiny at the nails;
- seizing, holding fast, carrying, and releasing at will;
- conforming to the shape of what it holds, round or flat or irregular;
- serving as the bodily organ of every craft: writing, weaving, playing instruments, wielding tools;
- being set at the end of a long arm and near the eyes and mouth, so it can reach the whole body and serve the senses it works with.
The number and rank of the fingers (عدد الأصابع)
- five fingers, the fittest number, neither so few that grasp is weak nor so many that they crowd;
- four ranged on one side against one (the thumb) on the other, the arrangement that makes a grip possible;
- their graded lengths (the middle longest, the rest shorter by degrees) so that the tips meet evenly on a curved object;
- set close enough to act as one surface, yet free enough to act singly.
The thumb (الإبهام)
- placed opposite the four fingers (opposition), which is the single feature that turns a paw into a hand;
- set at an oblique angle so it can meet each of the four in turn;
- made thicker and stronger than the rest, because alone it must answer the force of all four together;
- able to press against one finger for a fine pinch or against all four for a firm hold;
- called "the great one" for its power, the finger the hand cannot do without.
The joints and phalanges (المفاصل والسُّلاميات)
- three bones (phalanges) in each finger, two in the thumb, giving several points of bending;
- flexion toward the palm, so the finger can wrap around an object;
- graded, partial bending (not only a full fist), so the hand fits objects of any curvature;
- a measured backward extension, enough to open and release, checked so the joint is not dislocated;
- side-to-side spread and closure of the fingers, to widen or narrow the grasp.
The movers: muscles and tendons (العضلات والأوتار)
- flexor tendons on the palm side that draw the fingers closed;
- extensor tendons on the back that open them;
- a separate set of movers for each finger, so one may bend while another stays straight;
- the tendons carried across each joint to move exactly the part they should;
- the muscles placed up in the forearm, with only slender tendons reaching the fingers, so the hand stays light and slim for delicate work.
The palm, nails, and skin (الكف والأظفار والجلد)
- the hollow of the palm (الراحة) shaped to cradle what is held;
- the fleshy pads that cushion the grip and protect the parts beneath;
- the nails (الأظفار) backing the fingertips so they can press without bending back;
- the nails letting the hand pick up the smallest objects, and protecting the finger ends;
- the skin of the palm, rich in the sense of touch (اللمس), for discriminating texture, shape, heat, and cold.
The wrist and its supply (الرسغ والأعصاب)
- the many small bones of the wrist (الرسغ), which multiply the directions the hand can turn;
- flexion, extension, and side-to-side motion that position the whole hand;
- the nerves (الأعصاب) that bring both movement and the fine touch that makes the hand an organ of knowledge as well as action.
That is one hand, worked to Galen’s own grain: on the order of fifty distinct benefits at this level, and each could be pressed further (each muscle by its origin, size, and direction; each nerve by its branch). Multiply that habit of analysis across the whole body and al-Razi’s (الرازي) "nearly five thousand kinds" is simply what careful anatomy yields.
Books 2-3 worked in full: the arm and the leg (الساعد والساق)
Having read the hand, Galen (جالينوس) turns to the limbs that carry and place it, and then to the leg and foot, which he says are built for the opposite end: the hand for grasping, the foot for support and walking. Each bone and joint he fits to its office.
The arm, the hand’s reach (الذراع)
- the two bones of the forearm (عظما الساعد) laid to cross, so the hand can turn palm-up and palm-down;
- the elbow (المرفق) a hinge that bends one way only, giving a firm pull;
- the upper-arm bone (العضد) a strong single lever, swinging the whole limb;
- the shoulder (المنكب) a ball in a socket, the freest joint, so the hand can be brought to any point;
- the whole arm graded in length so the hand reaches the mouth, the head, and every part of the body.
The leg and foot, the body’s base (الساق والقدم)
- the thigh-bone (الفخذ), largest and strongest, bearing the body’s weight;
- the two shank-bones (عظما الساق) below, carrying the load to the foot;
- the knee (الركبة) with its cap (الرضفة), a hinge that locks straight for standing and folds for sitting;
- the foot (القدم) arched into a firm, springy base, its many bones adapting to the ground;
- the heel (العقب) set behind as a prop, and the toes (أصابع القدم) before for balance and push-off;
- the sole (أخمص القدم) broad and slightly hollowed, to grip and to spread the weight.
The same limb-frame, read once for reach and once for support, shows Galen’s rule at work: the parts are alike in kind yet shaped oppositely, each to the end its limb is for.
Books 4-5 worked in full: the organs of nutrition (آلات الغذاء)
Galen’s (جالينوس) frame for nutrition: food becomes the body’s own substance only through stages of "cooking" or concoction (طبخ), and every organ of the belly is shaped for its stage of that work, served by four natural faculties, the attractive (الجاذبة), the retentive (الماسكة), the concoctive (الهاضمة), and the expulsive (الدافعة). He reads each part as fitted to draw, hold, transform, or send on.
The passage down (المريء)
- the teeth graded to their tasks: incisors to cut, canines to tear, molars to grind (already in the mouth section);
- the gullet, the esophagus (المريء), with lengthwise fibres to draw the bite down and ringed fibres to push it;
- its carrying the food safely past the heart to the stomach below.
The stomach (المعدة)
- receiving and holding the food while the first concoction is done (the retentive faculty);
- turning the food into chyle (الكيلوس), the milky matter fit to be made into blood;
- set at the centre of the body, warmed by the liver (الكبد) on its right and the spleen (الطحال) on its left;
- its upper mouth for intake and its lower gate, the pylorus (البواب), opening only once concoction is complete;
- its several coats, with fibres running different ways to knead and move the food.
The helpers of the stomach (أعوان المعدة)
- the omentum (الثرب), a fatty apron laid over the belly to keep its warmth up for concoction;
- the mesentery and its veins (الماساريقا), drawing the chyle out of the gut toward the liver;
- the liver (الكبد), where the second concoction turns chyle into blood, and from which the veins and the natural spirit (الروح الطبيعي) arise;
- the gallbladder (المرارة), drawing off the yellow-bile residue;
- the spleen (الطحال), drawing off the black-bile residue and cleansing the blood.
The intestines and the water-passages (الأمعاء والكلى)
- the intestines (الأمعاء) long and much-coiled, so nothing useful leaves before it is drawn off;
- their narrowness prolonging the food’s contact with the absorbing walls;
- the parts graded in turn, the finer absorption above, the forming of waste below;
- the kidneys (الكلى) straining the watery residue into urine, the ureters carrying it, the bladder (المثانة) holding it until it is let go;
- the lower gate that keeps and then releases the residue at the fitting time.
One belly, read through Galen’s faculties, again yields dozens of distinct manafi (منافع): each organ drawing, holding, concocting, or expelling, and each residue given its own outlet.
Books 6-7 worked in full: the organs of breath and life (آلات الروح)
Galen’s (جالينوس) frame for the chest: the heart is the hearth of the innate heat (الحرارة الغريزية) that is life itself; that heat must be fanned, cooled, and fed with air, and its warmth carried through the body. So the lungs, the airways, the chest and its muscles are all built around the heart, and the arteries carry out the vital spirit (الروح الحيواني) it makes.
The heart (القلب)
- the wellspring of the innate heat and the warmth of life;
- its two chambers (البطنان): the right taking in blood, the left holding the finer blood and the vital spirit;
- its flesh thick and strong, unlike any other, to bear ceaseless motion without tiring;
- the membranous flaps at the mouths of its vessels (the valves, الصمامات), letting the flow pass one way and not return;
- the sac around it, the pericardium (غشاء القلب), sheathing and steadying it.
The lungs and airways (الرئة والقصبة)
- the lungs (الرئة) as bellows drawing in air to cool and temper the heart’s heat;
- their light, spongy substance, made to expand and shrink with each breath;
- their preparing the drawn air into pneuma fit for the heart;
- the windpipe (قصبة الرئة) kept open by its rings of cartilage;
- those rings left incomplete at the back, so the gullet behind can swell with each swallow;
- the little lid, the epiglottis (لسان المزمار), closing the windpipe during swallowing so food does not fall in.
The chest and its bellows-work (الصدر وعضلاته)
- the ribs (الأضلاع) arching over heart and lungs to shield them;
- the muscles between the ribs, widening and narrowing the chest to breathe in and out;
- the great muscle beneath, the diaphragm (الحجاب), drawing the chest down to draw in air;
- that same diaphragm dividing the organs of life above from the organs of nourishment below.
The chest, read as one system serving the heart’s heat, again runs to dozens of manafi (منافع): every part either guards the fire, fans it, feeds it air, or carries its warmth outward.
Books 8-9 worked in full: the brain and nerves (الدماغ والأعصاب)
Galen’s (جالينوس) frame for the head: the brain is the seat of sensation, imagination, memory, and voluntary motion; it refines the vital spirit (الروح الحيواني) into the psychic spirit (الروح النفساني), which the nerves then carry to every part. Each structure of the head he reads as serving, housing, or guarding that work.
The brain (الدماغ)
- the source of all sensation and of voluntary movement;
- softer in front to receive impressions, firmer behind where memory is kept;
- its hollows, the ventricles (بطون الدماغ), holding the psychic spirit;
- the large fore-brain and the smaller hind-brain (الدماغ والمخيخ), each to its share of the work;
- the net of vessels at its base, the rete mirabile (الشبكة العجيبة), where, in Galen’s account, the vital spirit is worked into the psychic spirit.
The coverings and the vault (الأغشية والقحف)
- the two membranes, the hard and the soft (الأم الجافية والأم الرقيقة), wrapping and cushioning the brain;
- the skull (القحف), a bony vault arched over it for a shield;
- the seams of the skull, the sutures (الدروز), letting vapours breathe out and lightening the vault.
The outflow: cord and nerves (النخاع والأعصاب)
- the spinal cord (النخاع الشوكي), the brain’s extension down the spine, a second spring of nerves;
- the nerves of the head (أعصاب الدماغ) in their pairs, serving the eyes, the ears, the tongue, and the face;
- the soft nerves given to the organs of sense, the harder nerves given for motion;
- each part supplied with just the kind and measure of nerve its work requires;
- the nerves carrying the psychic spirit from the centre out to the farthest limb.
The head and its nerves, read as the one system of sense and motion, again yield dozens of manafi (منافع), before any single nerve is traced to its branchings.
Book 10 worked in full: the eye (العين)
Book 10 is devoted to the eye, which Galen (جالينوس) held to be the noblest of the sense organs, and which he analyzed part by part around what he took to be the chief instrument of sight, the crystalline humour (الرطوبة الجليدية), what later anatomy calls the lens. Hunayn ibn Ishaq (حنين بن إسحاق) built his own famous ophthalmology largely on this book. Every surrounding structure Galen reads as serving, feeding, or guarding that central instrument.
The work of sight itself (الإبصار)
- perceiving light, and through it colour, shape, size, number, distance, and motion;
- the eye as the most far-reaching sense, taking in what is near and what is remote;
- two eyes set together for a wider field, for depth, and so that one supports the other.
The crystalline humour and the humours (الرطوبات)
- the crystalline humour (الرطوبة الجليدية): the principal instrument that receives the visual power;
- its clarity and transparency, so light passes without hindrance;
- its rounded shape, suited to gathering and holding the visual pneuma;
- the vitreous humour (الرطوبة الزجاجية) behind it, nourishing it and keeping the eye’s fullness;
- the aqueous humour (الرطوبة المائية) in front, cushioning it and preserving the clear space light crosses.
The coats of the eye (طبقات العين)
- the cornea (القرنية): the clear front window that admits light and shields the interior;
- the hard coat, the sclera (الصلبة): the tough shell that holds the eye’s shape and guards it;
- the grape-like coat, the uvea and choroid (العنبية والمشيمية): its dark pigment steadying the light within;
- the net-like coat, the retina (الشبكية): the spreading of the optic nerve that carries nourishment and, for Galen, meets the visual power;
- the pupil (الحدقة), the opening in the coloured ring: the doorway that lets light reach the crystalline humour;
- the conjunctiva (الملتحمة): the coat that binds the eye and keeps it in place.
The optic nerve and its path (العصب الباصر)
- the optic nerve (العصب الباصر) joining the eye to the brain (الدماغ), the seat of the visual power;
- its soft, channelled substance, carrying the visual pneuma (الروح الباصر) down to the eye, in Galen’s account;
- the meeting of the two optic nerves (the chiasm), so the two eyes work as one and their images agree.
The guardians of the eye (حُرَّاس العين)
- the eyelids (الأجفان): closing to protect, and blinking to sweep the surface clean;
- the blink spreading moisture so the eye never dries;
- the eyelashes (الأهداب): a fringe that strains dust and particles from the air;
- the eyebrows (الحاجبان): a ridge that turns sweat aside from the eye;
- the tears and their glands (الدموع والغدد الدمعية): moistening, washing, and lubricating the eye;
- the bony socket (المحجر) with its cushion of fat, sinking the eye into armour while leaving it free to turn.
The muscles that aim the eye (عضلات العين)
- the muscles that raise the eye, lower it, and turn it to each side;
- the muscle that rotates it, and the set that holds it steady;
- directing the gaze without moving the head;
- moving the two eyes together, keeping their lines of sight aligned on one object.
Again, one organ yields dozens of distinct benefits before any of them is pressed to the level of muscle-origin or nerve-branch. The eye alone, opened only to its first grain, already runs to dozens of manafi (منافع). That is the concrete shape of what al-Razi (الرازي) reports as "nearly five thousand kinds" across the whole body.
Book 11 worked in full: the face (الوجه)
Book 11 reads the face as the gathering-place of the senses and of expression, every feature set where its use requires, near the brain (الدماغ) it serves.
The senses assembled (مجمع الحواس)
- the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth set high in the head, close to the brain that works them;
- the nose (الأنف) at the centre, its two passages carrying breath and smell, its bridge shielding what lies between the eyes;
- the ears (الأذنان) at the sides, their curved shape gathering sound inward;
- the eyebrows (الحاجبان) arched above to turn sweat aside and shade the eye.
Speech, expression, and form (النطق والتعبير)
- the lips (الشفتان) and their muscles, closing the mouth, shaping speech, holding food and drink;
- the cheeks (الوجنتان) keeping food between the teeth and moving in speech and expression;
- the many small muscles of the face, which in man alone give the play of expression;
- the proportion and comeliness of the face, which Galen counts among its uses, not apart from them.
The face alone, as sense-gathering, speech-forming, and expressive, yields its own crowd of manafi (منافع) before the eye and ear, already worked, are counted again.
Books 12-13 worked in full: the spine and shoulder (الصلب والكتف)
Galen (جالينوس) reads the spine as the keel and axis of the whole body, and the shoulder-girdle as the anchor that gives the arm its freedom.
The spine (الصلب / العمود الفقري)
- the keel and foundation on which the frame is built;
- made of many vertebrae (الفقرات), not one bone, so it can bend and turn without snapping;
- each vertebra bound to the next yet jointed, joining strength to suppleness;
- its central canal guarding the spinal cord (النخاع) along its whole length;
- its jutting processes giving the back-muscles their hold;
- graded: stronger and less mobile below where the weight rests, freer above toward the neck (العنق) that turns the head.
The shoulder-girdle (حزام الكتف)
- the shoulder-blade (لوح الكتف), a broad plate anchoring the muscles that move the arm;
- the collar-bone (الترقوة), a brace holding the shoulder out from the chest so the arm can swing wide;
- the socket set at the plate’s corner, letting the arm circle freely.
The axis and its girdle, read together, again yield dozens of manafi (منافع): every vertebra and every brace fitted to hold, to shield, or to free.
Books 14-15 worked in full: generation and the fetus (التناسل والجنين)
Books 14-15 read the organs of generation, the sheltering of the fetus, and the hip that bears and moves. Galen (جالينوس) reads each as fitted to continue the kind and to guard the new life.
The organs of generation (آلات التناسل)
- the generative organs, male and female, each fitted to its share in bringing offspring to be;
- the seed (المني) and the vessels that prepare and convey it;
- the womb (الرحم) as the sheltered field in which the fetus is formed;
- its place deep in the pelvis, guarded by the hip-bones;
- its power to grow with the fetus and, at term, to expel it.
The fetus and its first nourishment (الجنين وغذاؤه)
- the fetus (الجنين) fed through the navel-vessels (السرة) while it cannot yet feed itself;
- the wrapping membranes and the afterbirth (المشيمة) that enclose, cushion, and nourish it;
- the breasts (الثديان), which prepare milk for the time after birth, placed high near the heart’s warmth;
- the hip-joint (مفصل الورك), a deep ball-and-socket that bears the body’s weight and still lets the leg move widely.
Generation, read through its succession of provisions, adds its own set of manafi (منافع): each stage of bringing and keeping a new life given its own fitted organ.
Book 16 worked in full: the vessels (الأعصاب والشرايين والأوردة)
Galen’s (جالينوس) frame for the vessels: three kinds of channel run side by side to every part of the body, so nothing lacks what it needs. The vein feeds, the artery warms and quickens, the nerve gives feeling and motion.
The veins (الأوردة)
- rising from the liver (الكبد), carrying the nourishing blood to every part;
- a single, thinner coat, since they carry the calmer blood;
- branching finer and finer, so even the smallest part is fed.
The arteries (الشرايين)
- rising from the heart (القلب), carrying the vital spirit (الروح الحيواني) and the thin, quick blood;
- two coats, thicker and stronger, to hold their forceful beating;
- their pulse (النبض) spreading heat and life through the body;
- set deeper and better guarded, because what they carry is more precious.
The threefold supply (الرفقة الثلاثية)
- vein, artery, and nerve running together to each limb, so it is at once fed, warmed, and made to feel and move;
- wider channels laid where more is needed, finer where less;
- the whole branching planned so nothing is starved and nothing wasted.
Followed through the whole body, the three channels multiply into a vast mesh of manafi (منافع): every organ and every limb given its own vein to feed it, artery to warm and quicken it, and nerve to make it feel and move, each fitted to what that part needs.
Book 17: the synthesis, nothing in vain (الخاتمة)
The seventeenth book is Galen’s (جالينوس) summing-up, and it is the one al-Razi (الرازي) would have most recognized. Galen gathers the whole into a single principle and then, remarkably, into an act of praise.
The summing principle
- nothing in the body is made in vain, nothing needful is left out, nothing superfluous is added;
- every part is for the sake of the whole living being, and the parts are fitted to one another;
- had any part been made otherwise than it is, it would have been worse, not better;
- the body is one ordered system, each organ answering a purpose.
All seventeen books are now opened at least to their first grain. Even at this level, without pressing any single muscle to its origin or any nerve to its branch, the count runs to many hundreds of distinct manafi (منافع). Carried to the depth the anatomists actually worked at, "nearly five thousand kinds" is not an exaggeration but a sober estimate, exactly as al-Razi (الرازي) presented it.

Why the count runs to thousands
The list above has about two hundred lines at its top level. So why does al-Razi (الرازي) say five thousand? Because one organ is never one benefit. The unit is the manfa’a (منفعة), and the tradition analyzes each structure to a fine grain: structure, then position, then the muscle that moves it, then the nerve that serves it, then the motion, then the interaction with the neighbouring part. Take a single organ, the eye, and follow that descent:
- the eyelid (الجفن): its structure, then its position, then its muscles, then its nerves, then its motion, then protection, then keeping the surface moist, then blinking, then its relation to the eyelashes (الأهداب), then its relation to the tears (الدموع);
- then each muscle of the eye: its origin, its insertion, its direction, its size, its position, its action, and its interaction with the opposing muscle.
Each of those is a locus at which the tradition records a distinct benefit. Run that on every structure in the seventeen books above, and the count reaches the thousands naturally. This is exactly what al-Razi means by anwa min al-manafi wa’l-masalih (أنواع من المنافع والمصالح), "kinds of benefits and advantageous purposes." It is also the method he sets out elsewhere in the same muqaddima: "whoever considers these levels in every particular existent finds doors of inquiry without end opened before him."
The Islamic anatomical tradition al-Razi drew on
Al-Razi was not inventing a pious slogan; he was pointing to a living scientific tradition. Galen’s (جالينوس) Manafi al-A’da had been in Arabic for three centuries through Hunayn ibn Ishaq’s (حنين بن إسحاق) school. Ibn Sina (ابن سينا) systematized anatomy in the Qanun (القانون). Later, Ibn al-Qayyim (ابن القيم) would fill works such as Miftah Dar al-Sa’ada (مفتاح دار السعادة) and al-Tibyan (التبيان) with anatomical reflection on the wisdom of the organs. And the maxim attributed to Ibn Rushd (ابن رشد) belongs to the same current:
من اشتغل بعلم التشريح ازداد إيماناً باللهWhoever occupies himself with the science of anatomy increases in faith in Allah.
What "five thousand" does and does not mean
Read rightly, "nearly five thousand kinds" is al-Razi’s transmitted magnitude for the categories of benefit that the anatomy books of his day had already enumerated, offered as a single example of an uncountable divine blessing. It is not a modern scientific statistic (modern anatomy and physiology describe far more than five thousand structure-function relationships, from over two hundred cell types to some six hundred and forty named muscles), and it is not a lost numbered manuscript. The reconstruction above is the faithful way to honour the statement: to show the tradition it points to, structure by structure, rather than to fabricate a list of exactly five thousand rows.

To the depth: every muscle that moves the hand
The hand is moved by two sets of muscles: the long muscles in the forearm whose tendons reach into it (the extrinsic movers), and the small muscles lodged in the hand itself (the intrinsic movers). Roughly thirty-five muscles in all. Each has, at minimum, an origin, an insertion, and an action, so each contributes several manafi.
The forearm flexors, closing the hand (القوابض)
- flexor carpi radialis (القابضة الكعبرية للرسغ): flexes the wrist and bends it toward the thumb;
- flexor carpi ulnaris (القابضة الزندية للرسغ): flexes the wrist and bends it toward the little finger;
- palmaris longus (الراحية الطويلة): tightens the skin and fascia of the palm;
- flexor digitorum superficialis (القابضة السطحية للأصابع): bends the middle joint of each of the four fingers;
- flexor digitorum profundus (القابضة العميقة للأصابع): bends the end joint of each finger, for the final grip;
- flexor pollicis longus (القابضة الطويلة للإبهام): bends the thumb’s end joint.
The forearm extensors, opening the hand (البواسط)
- extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis (الباسطتان الكعبريتان للرسغ): straighten the wrist and bend it toward the thumb;
- extensor carpi ulnaris (الباسطة الزندية للرسغ): straightens the wrist and bends it toward the little finger;
- extensor digitorum (باسطة الأصابع): straightens the four fingers;
- extensor indicis (باسطة السبابة): straightens the index alone;
- extensor digiti minimi (باسطة الخنصر): straightens the little finger alone;
- extensor pollicis longus and brevis (الباسطتان للإبهام): straighten the thumb;
- abductor pollicis longus (المبعدة الطويلة للإبهام): draws the thumb away from the palm.
The turners of the forearm (الكابّة والباطحة)
- pronator teres and pronator quadratus (الكابّتان): turn the palm downward;
- supinator (الباطحة): turns the palm upward.
The small muscles within the hand (العضلات الأصلية لليد)
- the thumb’s own mound, the thenar group: abductor pollicis brevis (المبعدة القصيرة للإبهام), flexor pollicis brevis (القابضة القصيرة للإبهام), opponens pollicis (المقابِلة للإبهام), adductor pollicis (المقرِّبة للإبهام): four muscles giving the thumb its abduction, flexion, opposition, and adduction;
- the little finger’s mound, the hypothenar group: abductor, flexor, and opponens digiti minimi (مبعدة وقابضة ومقابِلة الخنصر): its abduction, flexion, and cupping;
- the four lumbricals (الدودية): bend the knuckles while straightening the fingers, for the writing grip;
- the four dorsal and three palmar interossei (بين العظام الظهرية والراحية): spread the fingers apart and draw them together.
Thirty-five muscles, each with an origin, an insertion, and one or more actions: on the order of a hundred and fifty distinct manafi (منافع), from the movers of one hand alone, before its bones, joints, skin, and vessels are counted.
To the depth: the nerves of the hand, branch by branch
The hand is served by three nerves, and the tradition’s method is to follow each one to its every branch, motor branch to each muscle, sensory branch to each patch of skin. Each branch is a separate benefit.
The median nerve (العصب الأوسط)
- motor branches to most of the forearm flexors and to the thumb’s mound: a branch, and a benefit, for each muscle it drives;
- sensory branches to the palm side of the thumb, index, middle, and half the ring finger: feeling for each finger-surface it reaches;
- the fine discrimination of the fingertips, the hand’s power to read texture and shape by touch.
The ulnar nerve (العصب الزندي)
- motor branches to nearly all the small muscles within the hand: the spreading, closing, and cupping of the fingers;
- sensory branches to the little finger and half the ring finger, front and back;
- the grip strength that depends on the interossei it commands.
The radial nerve (العصب الكعبري)
- motor branches to all the extensors that open the hand;
- sensory branches to the back of the hand and the backs of the thumb and neighbouring fingers.
Three nerves, but many dozens of named branches, each a distinct supply of motion or sensation to one muscle or one strip of skin. The nerves of one hand, followed out, are themselves scores of manafi (منافع).
To the depth: the muscles of standing and walking
Galen (جالينوس) set the leg against the hand: the same kind of parts, shaped for the opposite end, support and locomotion instead of grasp. Pressed to the muscle, the leg and foot yield as many manafi (منافع) as the hand, each muscle with its own origin, insertion, and action.
The lifters and curlers of the foot (رافعات القدم وقابضاتها)
- tibialis anterior (الظنبوبية الأمامية): lifts the foot and turns its sole inward, clearing the ground in each step;
- extensor digitorum longus (الباسطة الطويلة للأصابع): lifts the toes;
- extensor hallucis longus (الباسطة الطويلة لإبهام القدم): lifts the big toe;
- flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus (القابضتان الطويلتان للأصابع وللإبهام): curl the toes to grip the ground.
The calf, the engine of the step (ربلة الساق)
- gastrocnemius (التوأمية): points the foot down, the push-off of walking, running, and jumping;
- soleus (النعلية): the steady plantar-flexor that holds the body upright against sway;
- tibialis posterior (الظنبوبية الخلفية): turns the sole in and holds up the arch of the foot;
- peroneus longus and brevis (الشظويتان): turn the sole out and brace the arch from the side.
The great muscles of the thigh and hip (عضلات الفخذ والورك)
- the four-headed quadriceps (ذات الرؤوس الأربعة): straightens the knee, the muscle of rising and climbing;
- the hamstrings (أوتار المأبض): bend the knee and draw the hip back;
- gluteus maximus (الأليوية الكبرى): extends the hip, the power of standing up, climbing, and the upright stride;
- the adductors and abductors (المقرِّبات والمبعِّدات): draw the thigh in and swing it out, steadying each step;
- the small muscles of the sole (عضلات أخمص القدم): hold the arch and move the toes for balance.
Some thirty muscles of the leg and foot, each with its origin, insertion, and action: another hundred-odd manafi (منافع), for standing and walking alone, exactly paralleling the hand but turned to the opposite purpose, just as Galen argued.
To the depth: the muscles that move and focus the eye
The eye is aimed by six muscles outside it and focused by three within it, each with a precise action; and the two eyes must be driven together. Pressed to this grain, the single eye multiplies as the hand does.
The six aiming muscles (العضلات المحرّكة للعين)
- superior rectus (المستقيمة العلوية): raises the gaze;
- inferior rectus (المستقيمة السفلية): lowers it;
- medial rectus (المستقيمة الإنسية): turns the eye toward the nose;
- lateral rectus (المستقيمة الوحشية): turns it outward;
- superior oblique (المائلة العلوية): rolls the eye and turns it down-and-out;
- inferior oblique (المائلة السفلية): rolls it the other way and turns it up-and-out;
- and above them the lid-raiser, levator palpebrae (رافعة الجفن): lifts the upper lid.
The muscles within the eye (العضلات الباطنة)
- the ciliary muscle (العضلة الهدبية): changes the curve of the lens to focus near or far;

- converging them for what is near, and parallelling them for what is far;
- tracking a moving object smoothly, and darting between fixed ones;
- holding the gaze steady while the head moves.
Nine muscles, each with its action, plus the paired coordination of the two eyes: the single eye, pressed to its movers alone, already runs to dozens of manafi (منافع).
The arithmetic of five thousand
Now the number stops being rhetorical. At this grain the movers of one hand run to about a hundred and fifty manafi, its three nerves to several dozen more, and one eye to dozens again. Double them, since the body has two of each. Then set beside them the roughly six hundred and forty muscles of the whole body, each with its origin, insertion, and action; the two-hundred-odd bones, each with its shape, joints, and processes; the great and small vessels; the nerves and their branches; the organs and their several functions worked through in the seventeen books above.
So the figure al-Razi reports lands, at the true grain of the craft, in the right order of magnitude. The honest conclusion is unchanged: there is no single ancient scroll that lists five thousand numbered items, but the enumeration al-Razi points to is real, reachable, and, worked out part by part and muscle by muscle, genuinely arrives near that number. The wonder he draws from it, that a single body should hold so many fitted purposes, survives the counting intact.

Who said the human body has five thousand benefits?
Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (الرازي, 544-604 AH), in his tafsir Mafatih al-Ghayb (also called al-Tafsir al-Kabir), commenting on al-hamdu lillah (الحمد لله) in Surah al-Fatiha. Is the statement from Ibn al-Qayyim or al-Ghazali?
No. The wording circulating online is a faithful translation of al-Razi, not of Ibn al-Qayyim (ابن القيم) or al-Ghazali (الغزالي). Both scholars did write about anatomy and the wisdom of the organs, in the same tradition, but this particular "five thousand" line is al-Razi’s.
Is there an actual list of the five thousand benefits?
