Before you repeat one

The best-known compilation of his sayings is Nahj al-Balagha (نهج البلاغة), assembled around 1015 CE by al-Sharif al-Radi (الشريف الرضي) (رحمه الله). It is a literary compilation made some three and a half centuries after ʿAli (رضي الله عنه), and its compiler generally did not supply chains of transmission, so individual attributions in it require verification. Much of the material above circulates in that tradition and in the adab literature rather than in the graded hadith collections.

Islamic Divine System (IDS) publishes this collection as it was collected, and labels it rather than dressing it up. The Urdu collection in Aqwal e Zareen is published on the same basis.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nahj al-Balagha accepted by Sunni scholars?

Its literary standing is widely admired and its attributions are treated with caution, since the compiler did not usually supply chains and the work postdates ʿAli (رضي الله عنه) by centuries. The practical position taken by most is item by item: what is corroborated elsewhere is accepted, and what is not is not relied upon for rulings.

What about "I am the city of knowledge and ʿAli is its gate"?

It is very widely quoted and its authenticity is disputed. Hadith critics have graded the various chains anywhere from weak to fabricated, with some judging one route acceptable. It should not be advanced as an established prophetic statement without noting the disagreement.

Why are so many sayings attributed to him specifically?

Because he was genuinely known for eloquence and judgement, and a reputation of that kind attracts material. The same happens to Ibn Sina in medicine and to Einstein in science: attribution drifts towards whoever the saying would sound most impressive coming from.
